Portraits I made from last month. I'm still scanning away on a lot of film here. It was my hope to be able to take another series of these portraits, which would have included another self-portrait. I made some a few months back, but was frustrated by the lighting. It was tricky to make the self-portrait this time as I had an issue with the reflector and couldn't make my picture. So it didn't happen. I'm kinda bummed about it cause these are nice and I wanted a series of the three of us. I guess I could use the original one I did a few months back along with these for display. Or I could try again. Oh well.
Last semester I took a book making class. It was really an enjoyable process, and I got a lot out of it. Having the opportunity to make a hand-made book was invaluable. Its not an easy process at all. I used a stiff leaf structure and a decorative paper cover. The work in the book consists of the images and that will be included in my thesis.
The book is titled Something in the Way. I'm still producing some of the work through the summer, but the majority of the body of work is complete. Editing for the book was very useful. I will be starting on my thesis writing over the summer. There are probably about 45-50 images that will be in my show this fall. I feel the book I made, though a one of a kind, and a precious object in its own right, would also be well suited as a traditional published book because of the content. My goal is to begin to show the work and get feedback about its viability as a book and find out if I can make that happen.
Busy scanning away on my 4x5 film. This shit gets expensive. But for some images, you just can't beat it, well unless is 8x10. Now I want to make huge prints. Can I get a grant please?
So this is all the progress I've made on the puzzle for almost a month. Man, I'm never gonna have a clear table. 1,000 pieces is hard, its harder still when you quit working on it and look at it wondering why more isn't done.
This image is also over on the Art Seen Asheville blog. Ursula has a call for submission of still lifes that artists have set up and photographed. The entries are being accepted through June 1st.
If you happen to find yourself in Sylva, NC this Friday, May 6th from 6-9 PM then come by 511 Mill Street in downtown and check out the art show I'm in. SLUMP! is the title of the show, and its One Night Only! The work of the MFA students from WCU will be on display. I can guarantee you that if you come, you will see work by me that you will likely never see again. That's really all I can say about what I'm showing. I do plan on documenting it, so maybe that will surface sometime. But I figure, a show of just grad students for one night has to feature something completely different. And the entire time I've been in school I've waited to show this work. And now I will. The element it was missing is now part of it, and its ready to debut. Plus, you get to see some of the work of the students that are actually talented.
