Not sure if this will ever fit in the work I'm doing, but whatever. It seemed to make sense to photograph just the sky. Why not? It takes the theme of night, and the light produced specifically at night, and abstracts it. There are of course countless variables, the sky would always be different, and perhaps returning to that is a worthwhile endeavor.

There are a lot of pictures I make of bridges. Taken from bridges, under bridges and any other perspective you could imagine. There's something about them I like, enough at least for it to be a recurring motif. So here's yet another one, and I'm sure there will be plenty more. A few months ago I had this thought about how many times could I photograph the Patton Ave. bridge. Apparently a lot, even though this particular photo is a different bridge.

I found some old art projects from high school. I didn't get much encouragement from my teachers, at least that's what I felt. I thought I had some good ideas, and while my technique and technical ability weren't the best, the concepts seemed cool. But my grades didn't reflect the same opinion of my teacher. He wasn't really into it. I think my grades back then were a bit on the low end.

Well, that's me. I found this old ad I was in as a toddler. I remember being nervous and uncertain what was happening. Why would a doctor just be pretending to examine me? What was with the photographer and all his lights? The experience was a little bit traumatic, I mean there I was in a hospital and what not. I'm over it. I'm ok now.

This image keeps reminding me of something out of the movie E.T. That movie featured so much backlighting and rays of light, whether it was night or day. For some reason I'm interested in that light as evidenced in my other recent post. Or at least I'm finding myself being drawn to it. Oh, and another parallel to that movie is the lower perspective, especially in the other series. Huh, who knew?

So I like the direction things are going with these photos. They're more moody than a lot of my other work, and I'm trying to follow this possibility and still retain my sensibility. It seems as photographers, we're looking for a photo or several which can lead us in a direction and hopefully inform us about our work.

I really like this tree. The qualities of trees at night, and in winter, is really quite austere and mysterious. I really like the play of light that occurs, and the interaction between and within the space in which the object and the light meet. Notice too the bent fence post.

Old Work I Stumbled Upon While Being Bored

As I've been waiting to finish shooting a couple rolls and get them developed, and since I'm not having anything new to scan, I've taken the time to look back over some old work. The recent photographs that I'm making at night require a lot of color correction to get the right balance. There are multiple light sources, and they create color casts on various parts of the image.

Since I've been having to think about color even more so with these new images, and because I'm in a lull of scanning new film, I went back and looked at some old work. Some of which was never color balanced in the first place, often because it was never used or even printed. I also found some images that I felt I could better correct now from the first attempt and I readjusted those. Here are a few. I'm posting them because otherwise they will never see the light of day and basically because I'm bored. These are all from circa 2009, but they feel like a lot longer ago than that.

This photograph gave me a lot of ideas. It really helped me get some perspective on the new work I'm doing. It may not seem like much, but it may well be the cornerstone I need. Its really quite interesting how that can happen; out of nowhere comes a photograph that was made by some off chance and changes the whole thing. Or maybe the hope that it changes. Regardless of the potential insight to my work, I do love the quality of the night and black within this image. Its engulfing.

Even though there's no snow, its still cold at night going out and photographing. Does anyone feel like donating a camera to me? I could make good use of a 4x5 or 6x7 format. Really, cause I'm not feeling the connection with the Leica. Sorry, Leica. Its not you, its me. Well, maybe its you. Its just sometimes I want more resolution, but maybe I need to accept the idea of smaller prints, that fit the purview of the Leica? Just the overall impact of a smaller print is something I need to embrace.

Photographing in the 7th Grade

This is from a roll I took when I was about twelve years old and in the 7th grade. I was enrolled in a graphic design type of course, which also included a photography component. My dad took me out with his Olympus OM1 camera. I tried different techniques, such as a slow shutter speed, panning on moving objects, etc. Most were pretty bad, but some were ok. This one I like in particular.

I never got to use the darkroom, during the intro my friend Danny Wood and I were kicked out by the teacher for being disruptive (or just 12 year olds).

New work from the time after the sun goes down. Its winter, but there is still no snow. Come on already. Night in the snow would really work. You don't always notice, but there is a lot of light from artificial sources. These exposures are longer to capture it, of course, but the landscape and objects appear much illuminated. And I'm doing my best to make use of the 35mm camera.

This photo of an Elvis painting is from a dive bar in Kingsport, TN. I'm not sure of its name. Written on the sign beneath the bit about not talking on phones is a signature that reads "The Pub". It may in fact just be called The Pub. It seems I end up with a lot of photos of Elvis. I guess because I like him and his music, but I think there is more to it than that; its what he represents to many other people as well. I can't express how happy I was to see this painting hanging next to the bathroom. These kind of places make me smile.

As I've been visiting Kingsport to work on a documentary, I've seen this bar several times and always wanted to go in and check it out. Its windowless and sits at the corner of a building in a dilapidated part of town, which much of Kingsport is. The most wonderful thing happened as I walked through the door, the jukebox was playing, and quite loudly I might add, Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight. I felt as if I'd been transported back in time. It suited the atmosphere perfectly. It occured to me that no other song would really be suitable. The song, the windowless, artificial, unnatural light, the patrons all fulfilled their role in creating the perfect scene. The bar served pickled eggs stored in a big glass jar, upon which a sign in marker read: "My eggs are pickled". I'm describing the things I saw, the sounds, because it was truly so joyful. I asked if I could bring my camera in to take a picture of the Elvis painting and the bartender allowed it. There were so many things to photograph, but I was pleased to just have the photo of the painting.

Something in the Way: MFA Thesis Exhibition

So its finally here, my MFA thesis exhibition! The opening reception is from 4-6:30PM on Thursday, November 3rd. The exhibit will be open Nov. 3-11 at the Fine Art Museum at WCU in Cullowhee, NC. I know its a bit of a drive to make it out, but I hope you, loyal readers, will make the trip. It features 35 large-scale prints and a corresponding book. Also, my friend and fellow MFA graduate, Lauren Whitley, will be having a simultaneous opening in the adjacent gallery. So its a two for one opening. You can't beat that. I'm fortunate and honored to be sharing an opening and gallery space with Lauren, what else can I say? So come out and enjoy the art and dance party.

My work at the William King Museum

My work will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at the William King Museum in Abingdon, VA. Below is some information about the show which is entitled From These Hills: Contemporary Art in the Southern Appalachian Highlands. The exhibit opens on October 14th with the opening reception on October 13th.

Abingdon, Virginia (August 9, 2011) – William King Museum: Center for Art and Cultural Heritage is pleased to present its newest exhibition From These Hills: Contemporary Art in the Southern Appalachian Highlands. Widely known for the deep cultural and historical value, the Appalachian region continues to prove it has much to offer residents and travelers alike. From These Hills: Contemporary Art in the Southern Appalachian Highlands is a biennial exhibition that celebrates the diverse artistic talent in the region by featuring a variety of new works by artists working in all media in Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Southern West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. The exhibit held open invitations for artists in the area to submit their work for consideration of inclusion into the exhibit. In addition to the rich interaction with the public, From These Hills will welcome guest curator Amy Moorefield, Director and Chief Curator of the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University.

This exhibition will open to the general public on October 14, 2011. Featured in the show will be work in all mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed media and performance art. Photos I found in an antique store

These are some photographs I found recently at an antique store. I just wonder about the people in the images; who they are and what event is transpiring. Some are pretty straightforward, but the queue of people with luggage is ambiguous. Its not clear who they are and where they are going. Somehow they seem under duress. But perhaps not, maybe its just time for holiday. That doesn't seem plausible, however. So where are they being shipped to? What's up with that? Why read a newspaper on the side of a mine, or whatever rock terrain that is?

The woman admiring her baby is really sentimental. Well, maybe not. She's kind of looking at it questioningly. The light and open door are wonderful. The detail of the stroller is just perfect too. I like all of these.

Finding Photographs

These are two old photos I found in my parents' album. Lately I've been thinking about finding photographs, or refinding them. Recently I've accumulated more images, which include postcards and snapshots I find at bookstores or antique malls. There is an abundance of rich photographs out there. And I've "found" many interesting photographs in my own family's albums. Not photos that just interest me because of their connection to me, but ones that I find intriguing regardless of my relationship to the subjects.

I've realized just how many photographs I have. Many are my own that I've taken, while others are from my family's snapshots. Most of my family photos have been scattered about, either in boxes or old photo albums or scrapbooks. Trying to organize, store, and preserve them is difficult. But I realize I want to be able to more easily access my collection. And that means knowing what I have, where it is and how to get to it. Many of the photos I hadn't seen for years and had forgotten about or never really remembered. Looking through them now, I see aesthetic pleasantries that I hadn't appreciated fully before.

When buying photos at antique malls, I'm drawn to the images I can make up a story for. There's a compositional element that intrigues me, and lures me into purchasing, which is not something specific I can describe. But I also like the mystery, or uncertainty of what may be going on within the photograph. There's information and enough clues to piece together, but you will never know all the details. I realize I will not know the people's names or what the exact relationship between the individuals may be. However, I don't need to know. While they may be personal photographs, the descriptions and ambiguity are what make it art; that and the context in which I'm viewing them, which is as appropriated or found art.

Malvern Hills

I could tell you this image was made in Malvern Hills, but it wouldn't really matter. Not to me anyway, and probably not to you. Maybe the specificity would signify some broad concept, that could be then specifically applied to a geographic locale. I like to think it was made elsewhere, another city, another state even. That's what I like to make believe. Because when I see it, my mind somehow believes it. I can't even really think it is so close. Its about something other than the place anyhow. Or a place that exists everywhere and nowhere. Its a corner you can never go back to. Or maybe one you will see in the future. These are the things I see.

New book, Polaroids

My new book, Polaroids, is just completed. Below is my statement.

Polaroids have existed since before I was born, so throughout my life they were always there. Some of the first photographs taken of me as a newborn, which I still have, are Polaroids. As a child, family members would pull out the camera and photograph the holidays, parties or get-togethers with a Polaroid. In my adolescence, my friends and I would make pictures of ourselves goofing off, or of some mundane object or scene we came across. I took them for granted as part of the culture and assumed they would always be around.

These Polaroids were made primarily in 2008, around the time the Polaroid Corporation announced plans to discontinue producing their legendary films. I spent several months shooting as much of the film as I could afford, realizing it may soon be gone forever. This work is the result of my efforts.

Shortly after Polaroid discontinued production, a small group calling themselves The Impossible Project, came together and purchased some of Polaroid's equipment and sought to continue making their own instant film to be compatible with existing Polaroid cameras. In 2011, I purchased a pack of the new film and shot the 8 frames that were in the package. The films had to be reinvented, as the Polaroid dyes were no longer available. The new films offer instant pictures, like the original Polaroids, however, the dyes, colors and processing are slightly different. There is more variation in the exposures and color tones of the new film. A few of those are included in this body of work as well.

So here it is. At long last. My book Something in the Way, which features work made over the last two years. This book is also part of my MFA thesis exhibition, which will be in November. Many of these images will be included in the show. The work of the exhibit and the work within the book are slightly different, with photographic prints on display that didn't make it into the book. However, as a body of work intended as a book, this is the edit, sequence and narrative that I found suitable. This is the most ambitious project I've done to date and am so happy to have the work viewable. It feels like the work is more challenging than what I've done previously.

Polaroids

I've added a new gallery to my website. It features my Polaroid photos. A couple years ago, Polaroid announced they would be discontinuing their film manufacturing. I spent about nine months shooting with my SX70 camera and Land Camera to make a body of Polaroid images, since they would soon be gone forever.

However, the Impossible Project came along and still offer films for Polaroid cameras. I recently ordered my first Polaroid film through the Impossible Project. It was really nice to be able to shoot again. The only downside is the cost. Its prohibitively expensive for me, unless I'm able to get some grant or something. Anyway, I shot the pack I had and felt happy. Maybe it'll be something I can treat myself to once or twice a year. Anyway, I figured it was time to edit these Polaroid photos and do something with them. Maybe I'll do a little book too. I think those are always kinda fun.

Rock Cut I-75

On the way back from Chicago, I stopped in a gas station outside of Knoxville. It was an incredible place. First off, the bathrooms were an obnoxious green. However, apparently they were at one time a purple color, because people went nuts and scratched through the paint to deface the walls. This was done in both the men's and women's bathrooms. No, I didn't go in the women's bathroom. I could just see it when the door opened up.

So then, the music playing was some 80s hair metal station. Great. Third, the woman working there had her baby with her behind the counter. Then the fourth awesome thing about this station was their postcard selection. I scored the two postcards you see below. They were only .50 cents each and look at those beveled edges! Isn't that rock cut impressive? The postcards were new, but the photographs were probably several decades old at this point.

Now I'm not mocking or making fun of any of this. I find it terribly interesting and there was a certain order to everything. It seemed genuine and authentic. One of my favorite things is getting to experience something like that, something that is totally in balance with itself, even if that balance looks like something other than what we are familiar with. We shouldn't think or judge, balance is balance, we can't bring our preconceived notion of what something should be like or look like. One should just recognize when something is in unison with itself. That gas station was more real than most of the city I live in.

I wanted the chickens

Couple weeks back I was turning around in a driveway and saw these fantastic chicken sculptures, or whatever they are. I don't even know. Anyway, I got out and the owner came out as I approached his door to ask permission to make a picture. He was obliging, however, he told me to just be careful of the dog tied up below the window."He will bite you", he said.

I wanted a photo of just the chickens in the window, so basically I wanted to be closer. Like under the window closer to get what I was after. However, that put me in range of the dog's chain. And he would bite me. So this was a close as I could get. Which isn't the same. Its ok. The picture is interesting, I guess. But not really at all what I wanted. This is a detail of the chickens from the window. You can see their awesomeness. The rooster had a confederate flag for feathers. You can't beat that. I was thinking, well why can't you help me out and hold the dog back? But I came to realize that the dog would have probably bitten him too.

So my band House of Building recorded an album. We are in the process of finishing overdubs and then mixing. This will be the fun part. The plan is to release it as a cassette, however, we will also make MP3s available. Mixing should take most of the fall and hopefully we'll get something out before the end of the year. The album will include 10 songs. Thanks to all who have supported us and come to our shows. Here's a sample rough mix of our song Let's Go. So please be forgiving. This song still needs handclaps to be overdubed, and a fade-out ending, mix etc.

The most fascinating man, and living attorney, resides in Kingsport, TN. At 92 he is still practicing law. I came across him and his office on some off-chance while exploring Kingsport last month. His stories and life are fascinating and too grand to even begin to expound upon here. But I plan on revisiting him and documenting what I can of his life and character.

He told me the desk pictured was purchased by him at the start of his career for $10. He wouldn't part with it for any sum of money. Its as if the desk is a metaphor for his life and career. He told me of the cases he worked on over the desk, and also of the checks that were laid upon it.

Thesis

My thesis semester starts in a little over a week. I will beginning work on printing the photos for my exhibit, which opens on Nov. 3rd. During the coming weeks I will be writing my thesis and probably pulling my hair out. Regardless, there won't be much new work for me to share. The focus now is on the writing and completion of my project. So this will be adios for awhile. Hopefully one day I will be back with new work.
